Electronic Resources and Serials Cataloging/Metadata Librarian

The University of California, Irvine Libraries invites applications for the position of Electronic Resources and Serials Cataloging/Metadata Librarian.  This position is responsible for cataloging and maintenance of serials and e-resources in all formats and languages.  We are seeking a knowledgeable, energetic, and enthusiastic librarian eager to join the Libraries as we increase participation in non-MARC metadata creation for digital collections.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of the Cataloging & Metadata Services Department, the Electronic Resources and Serials Cataloging/Metadata Librarian will provide leadership and expertise for original and complex contributed cataloging and metadata maintenance associated with serials and electronic resources, applying national standards using MARC 21, RDA, LC PCC PSs, AACR2, and the Library of Congress classification system and subject headings.

The incumbent will manage the batch loading and maintenance of catalog records received from vendors and the University of California cataloging consortium. She /he will use data-loading tools and batch-processes, and will manage, prepare and facilitate the loading of e-resource record sets into the ILS, as well as performing e-record maintenance.

The incumbent will manage the Serials, GPO, and Electronic Resources Cataloging Unit and will supervise 3 catalogers whose duties include cataloging serials, electronic resources and US government documents.

The incumbent will serve as an expert resource person regarding serials and electronic resources cataloging within the Department and throughout the Libraries and will serve as the Libraries’ liaison to the UC-CONSER funnel.

The incumbent will maintain awareness of and engagement with national and international trends and developments in cataloging and metadata standards.  As a member of the Cataloging & Metadata Services Department’s management team, the incumbent will participate in the development of local cataloging and metadata policies and procedures and in the local implementation of national standards, rules and best practices for cataloging and metadata.  The incumbent will participate in library-wide committees, task forces, and special projects, and will be involved in University of California system-wide initiatives and projects related to cataloging and metadata.

Qualifications

Required

• Graduate degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of three years recent cataloging experience.
• Minimum of one year supervisory experience.
• Experience cataloging continuing resources, serials and electronic monographs according to CONSER and BIBCO standards.
• Significant knowledge of and ability to apply the following cataloging tools: Resource Description and Access (RDA), the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2r), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) and Library of Congress Classification (LCC), and MARC21 formats for bibliographic and authority data. 
• Experience cataloging materials through a cataloging utility such as OCLC, in an integrated library system environment. 
• Ability to supervise, lead, and work in a team environment.
• Ability to make decisions independently within the framework of departmental and library policies and goals. 
• Ability to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities showing initiative and flexibility. 
• Ability to train staff and prepare effective training materials and other documentation.
• Demonstrated analytical problem solving skills and ability to prioritize.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.

Preferred

• Three or more years of supervisory experience.
• Experience with a national cooperative cataloging program such as PCC, NACO, BIBCO, CONSER or SACO.
• Experience with MARC record batch processing, including the use of metadata manipulation tools such as MarcEdit.
• Experience performing name, series, and subject authority work.
• Working knowledge of one or more Western European language.
• Experience cataloging special collections material.
• Experience cataloging in an academic or research library.
• Experience working with digital libraries or institutional repositories.

The Cataloging & Metadata Services Department

One of four departments in the Research Resources Division, the Cataloging & Metadata Services Department is responsible for cataloging and maintaining access to the Libraries collections in all formats, subjects, and languages.  The Department consists of 5 librarians (including the department head), 16 library assistants, and a varying number of student assistants. There are three units within the department: 

·       Catalog Maintenance and Physical Processing & Repair Unit

·       Monographs and Special Formats Cataloging Unit

·       Electronic Resources, Serials, and GPO Cataloging Unit

The Department uses OCLC for cataloging and Innovative Interfaces Inc. Millennium as the Libraries' ILS.

The UCI Libraries

Salary & Benefits:  Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University of California pay scales.  Appointment is anticipated to be at the Assistant Librarian, Associate Librarian, or Librarian rank with a salary of $50,334 – $85,933 plus an annual administrative stipend.

Librarians are entitled to two days per month of annual leave, thirteen paid holidays, and one day per month sick leave.  The University has an excellent retirement system and offers a variety of group health, life, and disability insurance plans.  Benefits are equal to approximately 40% of salary.
