Director, Technical Services Group (FA024z)
The George Mason University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic Director, Technical Services. We are seeking an expert, forward-looking and motivated individual to lead talented library
faculty and staff toward the future of technical services. The Technical Services Group was recently re-organized into Resource Acquisition (all formats), Resource Description & Metadata Services, a Payments Unit, and the Gifts-in-Kind Program. Annual workload
typically involves cataloging 40,000 books/other research items; managing orders for 1,800 print/28,000 electronic journals, and 800 digital databases; and managing access to 1.3+ million e-books and 130,000 e-journals. The Technical Services Group currently
comprises 25 staff, including seven faculty (librarians), 18 full-time paraprofessionals (plus 2.5 FTE student assistants). This position has six direct reports, including three paraprofessionals and three faculty.
Given the evolving developments within scholarly communications, trends in the academic/research marketplace, and learning/research priorities of the university, s/he will ensure both
operational excellence and a forward-looking evolution of our technical services functions. Working closely with the Head, Collection Development as well as with subject specialist librarians, it is expected that the incumbent will have significant understanding
of collection development in academic research libraries. S/he will provide oversight of professional development and training for all Technical Services faculty and staff; set broad goals for Technical Services; and ensure that all policies, procedures and
workflows are appropriate for accomplishing the work of the units and for successfully meeting users’ expectations in an increasingly digital environment. Position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Resources & Collection Management Services.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required:
·
ALA-accredited MLS;
·
substantial experience with technical services in a research-level library at an academic setting;
·
keen understanding of technical services issues and workflows;
·
solid knowledge of and understanding of bibliographic control and related intellectual organization schemes for management and access of multi-faceted and multi-format research materials.
·
significant experience with integrated library systems;
·
strong technology skills;
·
excellent supervisory, administrative, planning, organizational and interpersonal skills;
·
strong service orientation;
·
Significant increasingly responsible relevant experience, including department/unit head management experience (at least five (5) years preferred).
Preferred:
·
knowledge of and facility with evolving metadata standards and mark-up languages;
·
experience with OCLC and ExLibris Voyager;
·
project management expertise;
·
familiarity with state, federal or comparable purchasing regulations, including contract management;
·
collegial, collaborative and consultative style;
·
and experience in at least two of the following functional areas: acquisitions, including serials and/or e-resources management; cataloging/metadata; budget management;
·
significant understanding of collection development in academic research libraries.
Appointment/Benefits:
