Up until about a year to a year and a half ago, we had a current periodicals section on the first floor of our building. Current issue was on the slanted shelf,
and the previous issue was on the flat shelf underneath it. Nearby was the shelving holding back issues (both bound and unbound) of all titles that we currently subscribed to. Our “dead” collection of journals we no longer subscribed to was upstairs at the
end of our collection shelving. At that time, we moved all back issues of all journals upstairs to open up our first floor space, but the current issues stayed where they were. This semester, we made the decision to move all periodicals upstairs to have
them in one area. Current and “dead” titles are interfiled in their disciplines, with shelf magnets to indicate which titles are currently received. Plastic storage holders for periodicals have labels with the coverage date range for each holder, so users
can see that an open-ended label is the holder currently being filled and will have the current issue of that journal.

Subject: [SERIALST] New Periodicals Areas vs. Stacks
Hello,
We have a new periodicals area near the front of the library. We keep the most current 3 issues of a periodical here. The rest are kept in the stacks.
Some of them are
Does anyone else have a new periodicals area? If so, how many issues do you keep here (the most current, the current year's worth?)
