Electronic Resources Librarian

Western Carolina University's Hunter Library seeks an enthusiastic and service-oriented individual to serve as the Electronic Resources Librarian. This position will provide leadership and professional expertise in the management and coordination of library electronic resources. The ERL will activate and manage access to a wide range of licensed electronic resources such as databases, journals, and books. The position will also serve as the go-to person for all library staff for resolving problems related to access and works closely with public service librarians to enhance the user experience. Other responsibilities include supervising one full-time staff member; maintaining the Innovative Interfaces proxy server and link resolver; maintaining e-resource knowledge bases, including EBSCO A-to-Z; collecting and tracking usage data; database administration; coordinating tasks related to e-resources among all the various constituents; and working collaboratively within the Western North Carolina Library Network on e-resources issues. The successful candidate will be professionally engaged, forward-thinking, collaborative, and have the ability to initiate and complete projects in a timely and independent manner. This position reports to the Department Head for Content Organization and Management and works closely with the Acquisitions and Collection Development Librarians in providing access to licensed library resources. The library's size and culture allow for involvement in many areas, including providing library reference and/or instruction service. Library faculty are highly engaged in library planning and policy-making.

About the University

Western Carolina University (WCU) is an enrollment growth campus within the University of North Carolina system and is situated in a beautiful valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains, west of Asheville and near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.  While in a rural setting, the university is one hour from Asheville, and only three hours from Atlanta and Charlotte. About the Library

The university library is housed in Hunter Library on the WCU campus and extends services to distance education and instructional sites in Asheville and Cherokee.  WCU’s library has a long, respected record of providing excellent service to the university community. Library staff are dedicated to the thoughtful integration of print and digital resources and to supporting the information literacy development of students and the teaching and research needs of faculty. 

The library has three departments comprised of 19 faculty and 30 staff members.  The Content Organization and Management (COM) department selects, acquires, organizes and manages intellectual content to support the learning, teaching, and scholarship activities of the WCU community. COM includes 5 librarians and 10 support staff members and is responsible for a collection budget of approximately $1.5 million. The collection includes approximately 610,000 print and 455,000 e-books and provides access to more than 62,000 journals; the library has 11 digital collections. The library provides support across the university for open access, data management, and work in the digital humanities.

Salary and Benefits

Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications.  Minimum salary: $44,000. This is a twelve-month, tenure-track position with a generous 24 days of vacation leave annually.

Minimum Training & Experience Requirements

Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent; demonstrated mastery (through experience or coursework) of current e-resources concepts related to trends and practice; strong customer service orientation with excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with colleagues; potential to meet the library's requirement for scholarship and service.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience managing e-resources in an academic library; experience with spreadsheets and databases; experience working with discovery systems; experience managing resources in a link resolver; experience working with III Sierra; experience with electronic resource management systems; experience working with proxy servers; experience working with publishers and vendors; supervisory experience.
