Emily,
This is not a rumor. After offering our microfiche on the Backmed listserv and not finding any takers, I brought it to our local high school art teacher who was very interested in them. He is always looking for new materials to expose his students to. I also gave him some old discarded bound journals.
He showed me some of the creations: one student incorporate microfiche into a charcoal drawing, another one made a vest and an umbrella out of microfiche, still another made a wall hanging with it.
Good luck,
Hella

Subject: Re: [SERIALST] Microfilm/microfiche withdrawal
We recently withdrew our film/fiche collections. A few items were taken by other institutions on our in-state offering list. Otherwise, our poor student assistants have been busy taking fiche out of envelopes and unspooling film in order to recycle the paper and plastic, at least.
A staff member/artist took some a bit of film to experiment with, and I've heard rumors that art teachers in some schools will take a small amount of materials to give their students a new medium to play with.
Interestingly, we did find a taker for the empty spools. Another institution wanted them for their reformatting program.

Andrea:
We recently had a large withdrawal project and I spent two days trying to find a recycling option for the microfilm/fiche and even that did not result in any solution. Kodak recycles film, but they deal in tonage! If you decide you want to go that route you might try your local hospital to see what they do with their old film (X-rays, etc.) and see if they have a recycling company that they use. What you withdraw is likely too small for you to recycle yourselves, but adding it to what the hospital generates could help you both out.
all the best,
Teresa

Subject: [SERIALST] Microfilm/microfiche withdrawal
We are looking at withdrawing our microfilm/microfiche collections. Our preference, of course, is to sell our withdrawn items, but I doubt there is a market for microfilm/microfiche. Does anyone have any suggestions for selling or donating these items? Or any other advice for such a project?
Thanks,
Andrea
