ProQuest is Seeking a Metadata Librarian (Cataloging, Library of Congress)

This unique position is located in Washington, D.C. at the Library of Congress.  The Metadata Librarian Cataloging, Library of Congress is a full time position, with working hours equally divided between duties to support ProQuest and duties to support the US ISSN Center. This is an exciting opportunity to work for an international CONSER-affiliated program at the Library of Congress while also gaining valuable experience updating and troubleshooting ProQuest’s databases and library software. The ideal candidate is an innovative, collaborative librarian who has experience with bibliographic control and implementing new workflows. This position does not supervise any direct reports.

 

What You Will be Doing:

The Metadata Librarian is responsible for ensuring the quality and timeliness of updates and additions for all ProQuest database authority work and the highest level of priority and customer visibility. For the US ISSN Center, the Senior Metadata Librarian performs ISSN assignment for the most difficult materials and essential cataloging, data acquisition, data capture and quality control activities.

Responsibilities include:

·         Researching, analyzing, and identifying new data and metadata requirements to better support internal and external ProQuest products, as well as reviewing current data and data for new and better uses.

·         Assigning ISSN and cataloging continuing resources (i.e., serials, databases, online directories, etc.) according to CONSER and ISSN standards.  Resources will encompass all formats, both print and electronic, that have been submitted to the Library of Congress for ISSN, including resources at the pre-publication stage. 

·         Resolving queries/problems with ISSN (or related) data as submitted by other ISSN centers, CONSER members, etc. 

·         Responsible for timely troubleshooting and resolution of incidents in the ProQuest database associated with questions about MARC records. 

·         May represent ProQuest to the industry, participating in conferences and developing relationships with key industry contacts (publishers, standards committees, and customers).

·         Helping to develop new workflows and efficiencies and provide input for new systems

What You Will Need to be Successful:

·         Masters’ degree or higher in a relevant field, such as Library Science, plus at least 4 years’ related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

·         Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to professionally interact with a diverse blend of personalities to reach resolution and maintain strong relationships.

·         Strong working knowledge of MARC and serials

·         Evidence of ability to independently plan, analyze, and solve problems creatively, flexibly, and resourcefully.

·         Proficient use of Microsoft Office with an emphasis in Excel and Access.

·         Attention to detail and accuracy while handling a high volume workload.

·         Excellent researching and problem solving and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to analyze, compare, evaluate, reconcile and order data.

·         Strong ability to move projects forward as an individual contributor.

·         Proven written and verbal communication skills.

·         An interest in metadata issues and emerging technologies.

·         Aptitude for learning electronic resource management and metadata standards and formats.

Ancillary Qualifications:

Qualifications listed below, while not necessarily a requirement for this position in each circumstance, provide additional depth and value to the role.

·         Knowledge of XML and HTML.

·         Some knowledge of XSLT, Regex, SQL or other programming languages that aid in data manipulation is very beneficial.

·         Fluency in additional languages.

·         Project management skills and experience.

Other important information about this position:

·         This position is located in Washington, D.C.

·         Travel to the Seattle office is required, up to two visits annually. Other travel may be required.

·         This position requires weekday (Monday - Friday) attendance with some scheduling flexibility available around core working hours.
