Does membership in HT give you access to other members' copyrighted material?  Wouldn't that be a copyright violation?

Thanks

Hi everyone,

My institution is considering joining HathiTrust and it’s very likely we will, if we can work through the Shibboleth issue.

Question to you all is, what do you think about withdrawing periodicals covered by HT? I mean, not art-intensive or otherwise valuable titles, but your general pre-copyright, very dusty and deteriorating volumes that it seems nobody will ever look at. The old literary review type magazines, especially.

I know that HT is an on-going subscription rather than a purchase, but we’ve had them run analysis on our holdings and the price isn’t that bad.  Colorado College is solid when it comes to financial situation. So I’m not too worried about having to cut that subscription in the future.

We would obviously check HT for coverage when considering withdrawing a title. I don’t know about trying to check for every single volume since HT doesn’t list them conveniently.

So I’m just appealing to the collective wisdom here and if anybody else has undertaken such a project please share your experiences and workflow.

Thanks,
