In the past we've used the "What to Withdraw Print Collection Decision Support Tool" developed by Ithaka for JSTOR withdrawal decisions. It does a good job of evaluating the image per page ratio and completeness of archive coverage for each title in JSTOR. Here's a link to the instructions - within the instructions is a link to the tool itself:

The only thing that's not clear is how often this is updated to include new titles, etc.

Hi, Steve.  That's an excellent point and one which we have also considered.  At first, we were keeping all art journals in print, but it is possible that we should extend this to perhaps include biology journals that might have scientific illustrations, etc.  Is there a list somewhere of JSTOR journals which have images?  If not, is there an easy way to figure on which ones to keep, like art journals?

Subject: [SERIALST] JSTOR weeding - images

One other thing to evaluate before weeding journals in JSTOR is the images contained within.  We have many JSTOR collections but are keeping all journals which are visually-based and composed of multiple images/photographs/reproductions.  The newer scans are improving but the older images in JSTOR are often blurred or contain bleed-through from the back of the page.  Those in the visual arts often prefer the original image in the hard copy if the JSTOR scan is not as good quality.  We have removed most of our JSTOR titles which were only textually-based.
