Ditto!

We were in the middle of the Faxon mess as well.  It seems like ages ago but I recall getting calls from vendors about payment which was my first clue something was going on.  When I called our service rep, I was assured everything was fine.  We had already submitted our renewal money and it was extremely aggravating to find out that they probably knew they were going under as they accepted and cashed our checks.

I don’t feel you are under any obligation to pay for your 2015 renewals.  If the company is actually in financial trouble, I would call my customer service rep and have them to hold off on submitting renewals on your behalf.  Our serial vendor generally doesn’t send payment to publishers for the next year’s renewals until October or November.  You are early enough that they shouldn’t have submitted any money anyway.  Unfortunately, you may have to deal with publishers directly until the situation is resolved or you have switched to another vendor.

As Jeanette says, be extremely cautious.

Best of luck,

Laura

Oh my goodness.

You do not want to send Swets any money.  Not now.  Believe me.

If what sounds like is happening is not indeed happening, they will be glad to take your money later.  But we are a former Faxon library, and I cannot say strongly enough, protect yourself and your library.  Every day was more jaw-dropping than the last, and I *still* do not understand how someone can buy a company, take money from customers of that company, put the money in his pocket, go under for lack of money to deliver what his customer paid for, and walk away.  Not just money, but taxpayers money, money spent in good faith to educate our youth.  It’s unbelievable - or it was, to me, and so many of us.

But it happened.  Protect yourself.  Protect your library; protect your students.

Sincerely,

Hello Cindy,

I was trying to find that out as well and contacted my reps at Swets. This is what they replied early this morning.

If a library has not paid their 2015 prepayment, but has “approved” renewals for 2015 in the online system, are they obligated to pay those subscriptions?  It seems if Swets can’t fulfill their part of the contract, no, but when do we know when that is clear? Swets has placed our subscriptions on “hold”, but what does that mean?
