Cataloging the Especially Special Formats Using RDA and MARC21

Friday, April 11, 2014; 8:30am-4:30pm

Henry Madden Library, California State University, Fresno, 5200 North Barton Avenue, Fresno, CA 93710

Presenters: Jay Weitz, Senior Consulting Database Specialist, OCLC, Dublin OH; Julie Renee Moore, Head of Cataloging, Henry Madden Library, CSU Fresno

Resource Description and Access (RDA) is the new cataloging standard designed to replace AACR2. This workshop will focus on the RDA description of special formats--all the materials you may have pushed aside to age, hoping for a record to appear! (Most libraries have these resources lurking in their cataloging departments.)

The presenters will focus on materials such as videorecordings, sound recordings, 3-dimensional objects, pictures, games, kits, and other especially special formats. The Teacher Resource Center of the Henry Madden Library at Fresno State is home to the largest curriculum collection in the state of California so we will be making use of these materials as our RDA cataloging guinea pigs.

Attendees will participate in hands-on exercises which will include use of tools and documentation in support of cataloging with RDA. Access to the online RDA Toolkit will be demonstrated and handouts will be emailed to registrants. The workshop will assume a basic knowledge of cataloging with AACR2 and MARC. A rudimentary knowledge of RDA would be helpful but we are here to help you learn about RDA!

Presented by CLA's Technical Services Interest Group and co-sponsored by the Southern California Technical Processes Group (SCTPG) and Northern California Technical Processes Group (NCTPG).
