As a member of the Electronic Resources
& Serials Section under the supervision of the Head of Electronic Resources
& Serials and as a member of the ITS management team, the incumbent’s
primary focus is to lead and supervise the Serials Acquisitions & Management
unit, a unit of thirteen staff that supports the acquisition, receipt, and
maintenance of serials and e-resources. The incumbent works
collaboratively with other ITS managers to develop department-wide strategic
and operational plans, policies, and best practices for technical services in
the Harvard Library. In addition, the manager provides the leadership and
supervision necessary for successful change management and staff
retraining.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Management and Supervision
• Manages a unit within the Electronic Resources &
Serials (ER&S) Section:
• As a member of the ER&S management team, participates in
developing and implementing policies, procedures, workflows and services of the
Unit, in consultation with the Head of the Head of Electronic Resources
& Serials section:
-Hires, trains, supervises, and manages
performance for full- and part-time support staff.
-Assigns tasks, plans, directs activities
of the unit
-Works with the Functional Coordinator to
create training materials and documentation for staff in the unit, oversees the
training of staff and evaluates staff competencies
• Fosters open communication within the unit, documents
decisions and discussions as appropriate, and shares information on behalf of
the larger organization to foster staff engagement
• Creates an environment that supports staff professional
development, encourages staff growth and advocates for resources as needed to
position the unit for success
• As a member of a strong, collaborative management team,
serves as a backup to the other managers
• Serves as a resource to other departments for their primary
functional area and as a secondary resource for general ITS questions
• Interprets and communicates policies, practices and
information affecting the Serials Acquisitions & Management unit
• Introduces ideas, plans appropriate communication and
training, and ensures effective documentation is in place to implement changes
in technical services policies and procedures
• Models professional behavior in the workplace at all times
through verbal and non-verbal communication; relates to others in a respectful
and collegial manner

Operations and Service
Delivery
• Establishes strong relationships with the campus
libraries to ensure continuing relevance of services that meet their needs;
collaborates with library colleagues to develop sustainable services within
achievable service expectations
• Ensures effective timely, efficient, and quality service to
patrons
• Collaborates with Functional Coordinator and Operations and
Performance Specialist to develop innovative methods to improve efficiency and
productivity of the unit, introducing automation to reduce repetitive
activities while ensuring ongoing quality control and adherence to agreed-upon
work standards
• Ensures effective, timely and standardized work processes,
policies and best practices to provide high-quality and responsive service to
library users, coordinating with the Operations and Performance Specialist, the
Functional Coordinator, ITS senior leadership, ITS management peers, Shared
Services and library colleagues, and other appropriate staff
• Reviews and stays current with vendor service offerings and
evaluates value to the Harvard Library organization; makes proposals as
appropriate for experimentation and adoption.
• Develops and directs special projects and initiatives.
• Contributes to unit goals by performing other duties as
assigned
Strategic Planning and Leadership
• Participates in departmental and unit-level strategic
planning in consultation with other ITS managers and staff
• Demonstrates accountability and creativity in building
strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• Through active engagement with colleagues and initiatives
across the Harvard Library system, promotes and participates in campus
collaborations that inform technical services.
• Represents the Harvard Library in committees and
associations beyond Harvard to offer leadership and contributions to the research
library community and the library profession
Basic Qualifications
• Master of Library Science or equivalent education or work experience required
• Minimum of 6 plus years of professional experience in academic libraries; Minimum of 2 - 4 years of management experience required; within a combined union and non-union staffing environment strong desirable; Demonstrated success in training, staff development, and performance management required
• Experience with creating and analyzing service standards, policies, procedures and workflows
• Excellent written and oral communication and negotiation skills required
• Ability to manage competing priorities with a positive, constructive, flexible, and cooperative manner required
• Demonstrated facility with technology required, including significant experience with integrated library platforms and bibliographic utilities, and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications required

• Excellent organizational, interpersonal, problem-solving and analytical skills; strong customer service orientation and flexibility to adapt to changing daily priorities
• Ability to work productively and cooperatively in a team environment, with flexibility and versatility , in an evolving work situation required
• Working knowledge of foreign languages represented within the processing streams of the unit desirable.
• Able to handle stressful work situations and maintain a professional demeanor when assisting colleagues with problems
• Commitment to be part of a continuous learning environment, updating skills as required to perform job duties
• Ability to supervise staff in multiple libraries across the library system
• Work is performed in an office environment and may require up to 6 hours of keyboarding a day.
