The publisher would probably say that the one library print subscription covers a large number of people. Probably not at $10 a person though. Publishers claim they lose money on library subscriptions (people don’t buy individual subs) and thus need the higher price for library subscriptions to stay in business.

We have the print through EBSCO (subscription arm) and the online through a small NPG selective title package. I don’t think we get a DDP for the print, either. [Checks EBSCONET, sees no DDP option, shakes tiny fist impotently]. We have to maintain both formats for this title per strong faculty sentiment, and it’s quite expensive.

What the market will bear, capitalism at work, etc., etc.

Subject: NATURE MAGAZINE = $10.00 ON THE NEWSSTAND

Hi folks:

NATURE costs us over $3500 per year at the print subscription price.

The newsstand price is $10.00 per issue.  At 52 issues per year, that is only $520.00 a year.

A huge disparity, even allowing for postage.

Are there libraries out there that have found a less expensive way, other than subscription, to obtain their issues of  NATURE in a consistent manner?

Very interested to know.

Sincerely,
