They are not in California, but I have used Absolute Backorder in Massachusetts. They ship UPS. The charges for issues vary depending on the title. I also heavily use the backissue listservs BACKSERV, BACKMED, and ALCTSDEU. With the backissue lists, the only cost generally is reimbursing the other library for postage. It helps the library needing missing or lost issues and keeps excess stuff out of the landfills.
