PRESS RELEASE
De Gruyter Purchases Two Academic Publishers:
Oldenbourg and Akademie
Berlin, February 26, 2013 – De Gruyter is proud to
announce the acquisition of two academic publishers with a long
and rich tradition: Akademie Verlag, based in Berlin, and
Oldenburg Wissenschaftsverlag, based in Munich. Both companies
were acquired retroactively as of 1 January 2013 from Franz
Cornelsen Bildungsgruppe, which is seeking to streamline its
business.
"The acquisition of Akademie and Oldenbourg will
considerably strengthen De Gruyter's publishing portfolio in
numerous areas," said Sven Fund, CEO of De Gruyter. Both of the
newly acquired publishing houses enjoy a strong professional
reputation in the fields of history, philosophy, business
science, and several areas of the natural sciences.
Together, Akademie and Oldenbourg published 44
professional journals and some 400 books in 2012, including the
Complete Works of Marx and Engels, the Collected Letters of
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, several recognized classics in
business economics, and the renowned Tusculum Collection. The
entire backlist of both publishing houses comprises some 4,000
titles.
"De Gruyter will invest in digitalizing the
acquired publications and in strengthening international
distribution," Dr. Fund added. De Gruyter has traditionally
placed a special focus on close cooperation with scientific
academies, professional associations, and authors. "The high
quality of the scientific contributions that appear in the
journals and books published by Akademie and Oldenbourg was the
key reason for our purchase," Dr. Fund explained.
De Gruyter will preserve the offices of the
acquired companies in Berlin and Munich, as well as the group
representatives in Basel, Boston, and Peking.

The
Service, providing access to selected data sources to UK
academic researchers, was launched on 2nd January
2013 with an initial set of commercial data sources. As part of
the Service, the RSC will also develop a chemistry data
repository for UK academia, and build tools, models and services
on this data store to increase the value and impact of
researchers' funded work.
At
a time when funding agencies, including EPSRC, are encouraging
publication under Open Access, and there is an increasing drive
towards research data preservation and providing access to Open
Data, the National Chemical Database Service will provide its
user community a domain repository to increase the
discoverability and reusability of the data.

Sponsors Green Solvents and Lab Solvents Mobile Apps
The
Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) announced they have
sponsored the Green Solvents and Lab Solvents mobile apps for
a year.
Green
Solvents and Lab Solvents are innovative apps for the iOS and
Android platforms that list solvents and their scores versus
various environmentally relevant properties. They are based on
published data that had not been widely disseminated in
conveniently available media. The apps are freely available and
were developed by Dr. Alex M. Clark at Molecular Materials
Informatics (MMI, Montreal, Canada) after an initial idea from
Dr. Sean Ekins at Collaborations in Chemistry (CIC, Fuquay
Varina, USA).
“These
apps are first class examples of how green chemistry data can be
delivered to a mobile device and complement other apps such as
ChemSpider Mobile, which we have developed with Alex.” said
Antony J. Williams, VP Strategic Development for Royal Society of
Chemistry. “We are honoured to support such efforts that raise
awareness of green chemistry and educate the public and serve a
need for scientists in the lab”.
“It
is really wonderful validation of these apps that an
organisation such as the RSC would sponsor Green Solvents and
Lab Solvents and this will help to further raise their
visibility to scientists globally” said Alex Clark, owner of
Molecular Materials Informatics. “Our recent publication in ACS
Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering on the development of
these apps has provoked a great deal of interest in how such
datasets can be appified”.

ProQuest and ER&L Support Librarians at SXSWi
#ideadrop house provides venue for think-tank discussions
to advance libraries and librarianship
ProQuest, and ER&L
are creating the ER&L + ProQuest #ideadrop house at this
year’s festival, March 8-12. Located in
the heart of Austin, (TX) the house will be a premier
destination for librarians to gather for salon-style group
discussions
about the future of libraries and librarianship. SXSWi is
renowned for its compelling presentations in the areas of new
digital
works and media technology, web interface design, and other
creative solutions, attracting some of the brightest minds in
emerging technologies.
“The
#ideadrop house at SXSWi offers library and information
professionals the opportunity to think differently about
libraries
in the broader world of digital creativity and emerging
technology,” said Bonnie Tijerina, head of electronic
resources and serials,
Harvard University. “I am pleased and excited that this vision
for thought leadership and creativity in libraries is now full
of life,
entrepreneurial spirit and youthful enthusiasm.”
An
early leader in supporting librarians attending SXSWi,
ProQuest hosted a meet-up at the 2012 festival. Its expanded
role
at this year’s festival is designed to create an opportunity
for more focused “think tank” discussions. The Digital Library Federation
(DLF) is also sponsoring live streaming at the house, enabling
the conversations to be shared with a broader audience.
“Our
experience at the 2012 festival showed us that librarians need
a place where they can share ideas about what they’re learning
at SXSWi to advance libraries,” said Pam Cory, vice president
global field and enterprise marketing. “Our vision for the
#ideadrop house is to create that venue for inspiring
discussions so we can push the innovation agenda forward.”
The
#ideadrop house is open to all SXSWi participants. To learn
more about the events happening there, visit the SCHED.
