In this meeting CaMMS Cataloging and Classification Research IG takes a look at accessing existing data in the context of new cataloging environment. The meeting features 2 presentations and discussion of research projects and tools that address organization and retrieval of information in a changing and increasingly global environment. Following the presentations, there will be an opportunity for audience questions and a panel discussion of issues by the presenters.
“Bibliotheca Alexandrina Subject Authority File and Linked data,” presented by Magda El-Sherbini, The Ohio State University Libraries.
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) started to build its own authority file since September 2006. This includes subject headings, personal names, corporate bodies, series, and uniform titles. The BA authority file is unique in that it is built on the actual collection and is different in its structure than LC/OCLC authority files. The focus of this research is on the subject component of the BA authority file. This includes the Latin and non-Latin subject heading. This research will address the workflow of creating the subject heading authority records; the linking data process; the similarity and difference between the BA authority file and the LC/OCLC authority file. It will also address the advantages and disadvantages of creating a local authority file and how to integrate the BA authority file into the international arena.
“Dragging old data forward: finding yourself an RDA Helper,” presented by Terry Reese, Gray Family Chair for Innovative Library Services.
Report on research about how MarcEdit can ease the transition from AACR2 to RDA with the help of a new MarcEdit tool, the RDA Helper.
The RDA Helper is a lightweight utility that can take AACR2 or RDA data and convert or improve the set of records. The tool allows users to select the specific RDA fields that they wish to generate, as well as provides functionality to automatically generate GMDs (for libraries that require that data) or remove them from their records. The goal of the RDA Helper is to meet one of four use cases:
Simplify working with vendor data or other contributed data that may not be provided in RDA
2) Automatically retro-processing older bibliographic data
3) Organizations that started using RDA but want to include new fields that weren’t available early on
4) Libraries that need to continue using GMD data within their local systems, but find the information deleted from current RDA records.
The presentation also focuses on the preliminary research results of how effective tools like RDA Helper are in moving between AACR2 and RDA.
