Our browsing periodicals section includes newspapers and popular magazines: The Advocate, American Heritage, AL, Atlantic, Audubon, Business Week, Chronicle of Higher Ed, Consumer Reports, Discover, Ebony, Economist, Essence, Forbes, Fortune, Guardian Weekly, Harpers, Harvard Business Review, Jet, Ms, Money, Mother Earth, Nation, National Geographic, National Review, News Week, New Yorker, New York Review of Books, NYT Magazine, NYT Style, Outside, Paris Match, People, Popular Mechanics, Popular Science, Psychology Today, Publishers Weekly, Rolling Stone, Sailing, Science, Skeptical Inquirer, Sky and Telescope, Smithsonian, Southern Living, Spin, Teaching Tolerance, Time, Utne, Vanity Fair, Variety, Village Voice, Wired, etc.  Not the complete list, but you get the idea.

The area is located on the first floor, adjacent to our recreational reading section, where we have popular fiction and non-fiction, recent biographies, and award winners, i.e. Putlitzer, National Book Award, Booker, etc. titles, and popular titles in series, such as the Dawn series, the No. 1 Ladies Detective series, Harry Potter, and cult classics, like the Confederacy of Dunces and the Life of Pi.  We also have a graphic book section in this area.  We market the books in various ways.  These books are arranged more like a bookstore or public library, and all have book jackets when jackets are available, etc.

We did observation research to see where our patrons went, and what they did in the library, over one year. Based on this research, the journal/magazine browsing area scored very high in terms of a destination for our patrons.  Among the areas visited the most. Our recreational reading books have high circulation.  I send many of our new literature books to this area, before transferring them to the general collection.

So the America I loved still exists, if not in the White House or the Supreme Court or the Senate or the House of Representatives or the media.
The America I love still exists at the front desks of our public libraries.

We have a gallery of popular magazines for people to just pick up and read when they are relaxing on the couches and chairs in our quiet reading and coffee room.  The magazines get used quite a bit.  I always see someone grabbing one or some laying out.  I try to keep a wide variety of popular magazines dealing with different interests and majors on campus.  For instance, I have out History Today, HR Magazine, Outside and Sports Illustrated.  My sense is that people like to just pick something interesting and relax with their coffee or snack.  I think it’s a highly utilized resource in an area that is highly trafficked and I think our patrons value the chance to just kick back and take a break from technology and school.

Subject: [SERIALST] Magazines for Leisure Reading

We’re in the process of opening a new Learning Commons and while we’ve always had a Leisure Reading section for magazines, I’ve been pretty haphazard in making choices for this section.  I was thinking about doing a little survey through our Facebook page directed to our students to see what they enjoy reading.  I was also curious about choices that are being made by others on the list.  Because of all the electronic resources  I know are Leisure Reading area is not as heavily used but are others seeing that as well?

Thanks,
