THE LIBRARY:
The University of Miami Libraries (www.library.miami.edu) rank among the top 50 research libraries in North America
with a collection of over 3.3 million volumes and 76,869 current serials titles, including 72,942 electronic journals. The Otto G. Richter Library lies in the center of the Coral Gables campus and serves as the central library for the University. Other University
of Miami libraries include the Paul Buisson Architecture Library, the Judi Prokop Newman Business Information Resource Center, the Marta & Austin Weeks Music Library, and the Marine and Atmospheric Science Library. The University also has independent medical
and law libraries. The Libraries provide support and services for approximately 10,370 undergraduates, 5,259 graduate students, and 13,058 full and part time faculty and staff. Excluding the independent libraries, the University Libraries employ 56 professional
and 90 support staff and are a member of ARL, ASERL, CLIR, NERL, RLG, and Lyrasis.
POSITION:
Reporting to the Director for Information Management and Systems, the Head of Cataloging & Metadata Services (CMS) is responsible for providing strategic and innovative leadership, vision, and management
of cataloging and metadata services across the University of Miami Libraries. The incumbent is responsible for managing all CMS operations, including cataloging and metadata activities in all formats and languages, supervising and mentoring staff, monitoring
contractual vendor services, and ensuring that library information resources are rapidly and accurately described in the Libraries’ discovery systems.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Performance:
§
Responsible for the planning, development, and assessment of cataloging and metadata operations, procedures, services, and activities.
Participates in cataloging and metadata projects as needed.
§
Manages, develops, and motivates staff (13 FTE, including 4 librarians) and student assistants to achieve departmental goals and meet the changing requirements
for cataloging, database maintenance, authority control, and non-MARC metadata creation.
§
Provides leadership and directs the enhancement of metadata infrastructures and practices within the Libraries, while collaborating with colleagues across
the Libraries to support growing metadata and digital collection initiatives.
§
Develops assessment and benchmark strategies, maintains statistics, and compiles narrative and statistical reports to support short & long-term planning
for the department and Libraries.
§
Keeps abreast of current standards, emerging technologies, and best practices and implements as appropriate to more effectively support the organization
of and access to library resources.
§
Works closely with Information Systems and other library units in planning and implementing library management systems and collections access technologies,
with special responsibility for cataloging and metadata aspects of all systems.
§
Serves as the Chair of the Cataloging Policy Board, developing and implementing cataloging & metadata policy in the context of national and local standards;
Leads the transition to new and evolving cataloging and/or metadata standards, such as RDA.
§
Communicates effectively and works collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators, and students, and operates effectively with multiple responsibilities
in a dynamic diverse academic environment.
Service
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
§
ALA accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science.
§
Minimum of 5 years of increasingly responsible professional cataloging and metadata practice and management experience in an academic or research library.
§
Extensive knowledge and recent experience in the application of national cataloging standards and practices [AACR2, RDA, LC Classification, LCSH, MARC
formats], issues and trends.
§
Demonstrated knowledge and experience in metadata creation, practices, and standards [e.g. Dublin Core, XML, METS, MODS, Precis, and/or VRA], and awareness
of national and international issues and trends.
§
Demonstrated innovative & creative approaches for improving technical services operations and an interest and involvement in emerging digital information
environments.
§
Demonstrated successful supervisory experience and proven management skills, including the ability to manage budgets and produce analytical reports based
on statistical data.
§
Experience with national bibliographic utilities (OCLC), integrated library systems, and digital content management systems.
§
Demonstrated commitment to user-centered library service and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing and fast-paced environment with
a culturally diverse population.
§
Demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
§
Ability to meet the criteria for Librarian Associate Professor, including evidence of continued professional development, involvement, and contribution.
Desired:
§
Experience with the III integrated library system and/or CONTENTdm digital content management system.
§
Knowledge of one or more foreign languages, Spanish preferred.
§
Experience working with special collections materials

Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. This is a non-tenure track faculty appointment at the Librarian Associate Professor rank. The position offers
