Duties And Responsibilities & Minimum Requirements: | Reporting to the Head of Technical Services at Lauinger Library, the Head of Metadata Services is responsible for the management of the Metadata Services Unit. Incumbent will directly supervise 2 cataloging librarians and 1 copy cataloging supervisor, and be responsible for providing innovative leadership for cataloging and metadata services. Will play a key role in leading the library’s efforts in planning, implementation, use, and assessment of metadata content involving a variety of formats, delivering digital initiatives support, monitoring the national and international trends in metadata creation, and directing on-going review and revision of library-wide metadata/cataloging policies and procedures. In addition, will serve as the resource person to all Library staff, answering inquiries and providing interpretations on existing and emerging metadata standards and rules. The Head of Metadata Services will work in collaboration with other library units to create metadata for digital and special collections, oversee the Library’s participation in cooperative metadata endeavors such as NACO, direct and supervise special projects for the Unit, serve as a member of the Department’s Management Team, and participate in policy-making decisions and Department planning activities. Qualifications: The candidate must have an ALA-accredited MLS degree, at least 2 years progressively increasing supervisory/management/leadership experience, along with demonstrated knowledge and experience with provision of metadata/cataloging services, including those related to digital initiatives within an academic or research library setting. The candidate must demonstrate excellent verbal and written skills. Experience working with metadata creation for institutional repositories is highly preferred. Working knowledge of MARC21and non-MARC metadata schema including but not limited to metadata formats, such as Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MODS, OAI, and XML required. Familiarity with data interchange standards (e.g., OAI-PMH); knowledge of the semantic web and linked data; experience with digital content management systems such as DSpace and ContentDM; knowledge of current standards such as AACR2, LCSH, LC Classification, NACO and forthcoming changes with FRBR, RDA and MARC; and emerging technologies in cataloging services, including those related to digital libraries and special collections is highly preferred. |
