The James E. Walker at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) seeks an innovative, collaborative and student-centered individual to lead its Collection Development and Management (CDM) Department.  The Head, CDM will help develop the vision for CDM operations in a changing environment and oversee policy development, strategic planning, assessment of collections, and CDM services to optimize user access to the library’s collections. This individual will work collaboratively to meet the information needs of MTSU students and faculty by providing strategic direction for the Acquisitions, Cataloging, Collection Development, Serials, and Special Collections units and ensuring coordinated efforts to assess and enhance access to quality collections. The Head will foster the professional development, collegial relationships, and continuing education of department staff.

 

The department employs 9 library faculty, 11 administrative and classified staff, and 13 temporary and student employees supporting the Innovative Interfaces (III) Millennium ILS and Encore discovery platform, a materials budget of nearly $3 million, and a library liaison program for collection acquisition.

A migration to III Sierra is expected in 2013.

 

This is a 12-month, tenure-track position. All library faculty are expected to meet promotion and tenure standards.

 

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Dean of the Walker Library, the Head, Collection Development and Management will:

         Contribute to library�\wide planning, policy making, development and assessment of services

         Direct the department’s contributions to annual academic program reviews, accreditations, and statistical reports

         Promote collaborative relationships with academic units for effective collection development

         Oversee allocation and expenditure of the library’s materials budget

         Coordinate assessment of print and electronic collections to evaluate overall effectiveness

         Lead planning for development of departmental objectives and procedures for bibliographic control of materials in all formats

         Manage workflow between CDM units

         Evaluate library faculty in the CDM department and supervise the evaluation of staff

         Maintain currency in trends and issues surrounding scholarly communication

         Represent CDM needs and priorities

 

Required Qualifications

ALA accredited master's degree; a minimum of five years post-MLS academic or research library
experience in technical services, at least two years supervisory experience, working knowledge of collection development, acquisitions or cataloging, familiarity with library technology issues, budget management experience, effective communication, facilitation, and project management skills, knowledge of issues, standards, and trends in bibliographic control & scholarly communication, understanding of the role and value of special collections in an academic library, effective communication skills and ability to foster partnerships and work collaboratively, ability to meet promotion and tenure standards.
