Hi, Barbara,

I noticed this database a couple of months ago, and decided to activate it after a few of our patrons had run across content in PubMedCentral titles that was unavailable to them.  When I checked the participation levels at the PMC site http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/pub/pubinfo/

I realized that had to be able to tell my users that NIH-funded content was freely available, while other content may not be, so not to expect access to ALL full text in PMC NIH portfolio journals.  The best solution I found was to include a Public Note under the Serials Solutions database.  I took an excerpt from the PMC description:

“Limited journal content available. Publisher commits to depositing all NIH-funded articles (as defined by NIH Public Access Policy). Publisher may also choose to deposit other, non-NIH-funded articles.”

I tried including  additional explanation to point out freely available NIH-funded content and non-NIH-funded content, but it made for a rather long Public Note.  We also have made our Public Notes display in our 360 link resolver pages so users will see information on limited content before they attempt to link to a full text article.  This also helps explain the content access in BMC journals, since not all of that is freely available.  If the publisher allows for the One-Click function, the Public Note doesn’t do much good since it bypasses the link resolver page, but so far, we’ve had very few complaints about the limited content in some PMC journals.

Hope this helps,

Best,

Joanne

Subject: [SERIALST] PubMed Central (NIH Portfolio) Journals

Hello, everyone.  I noticed this morning as I was searching the Serials Solutions knowledgebase that another PubMed Central database, called PubMed Central (NIH Portfolio) is available.  It has a different number of full text journals available (about 300 as opposed to the large number in PubMed Central).  Some titles that are in PubMed Central (NIH Portfolio) are not in the PubMed Central.  I emailed Serials Solutions about what the difference is and they pointed me to an FAQ page that talks about the degree of participation of the publisher in depositing articles.  That really means nothing to me.  I just want to know if all of the articles are full text and open access.  Anyone out there have any information on this?

Thank you.
