Description
In a context of reduced budgets, more and more libraries find themselves examining existing policies and procedures for the acceptance, evaluation, and processing of in-kind materials donations. A number of factors and considerations necessarily accompany any such examination, particularly if changes to existing policies, procedures, and workflows are proposed. Such considerations might include:
Stacy Gordon graduated from UCLA’s Library School in a year which most libraries would consider dated if it was the publication date of a donated book. She worked for the Stockton-San Joaquin Public Library System in California as a Reference Librarian, followed by time at the Daily News of Los Angeles, doing research and indexing of news articles. Returning to the public sector, she has worked for the Thousand Oaks Library in California since before her high schooler was born (and then some), first as a Reference Librarian, and more recently as the sole cataloger, where she encounters quite a number of donated materials.
Heath Martin is Head of Collection Management for the University of Kentucky Libraries in Lexington. He also serves as academic liaison to the Department of Philosophy and the Division of French and Italian Studies. He received his MLS from Queens College in Flushing, NY. Heath previously held positions in collection development and acquisitions at Western Carolina University and the Maritime College of the State University of New York (SUNY). In each position, he has been involved in the management of in-kind gift operations.

An ALCTS e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list.
