The Serials and Electronic Journals Coordinator works closely with Acquisitions and Reader Services staff to provide integrated and efficient workflows for serials.  The incumbent serves as the primary serials cataloger, creating original cataloging records and adapting complex copy cataloging records, and coordinates serials maintenance and serials metadata management in SIL.  The Librarian provides direct support for the local electronic resource management system, and helps SIL discover and implement additional tools for managing and delivering electronic resources.

Responsibilities

1.       The incumbent reports to the Supervisory Technical Services Librarian within the Technical Services Division and supervises (3) library technicians in the serials unit. 

  1. Responsible for serial records in SIRIS.  Oversees the creation and maintenance of serials holdings records.  Manages the transfer and withdrawal of serial volumes.  Supervises and trains two library technicians who perform periodicals check-in.
  2. Responsible for the copy and original cataloging of serial materials in English and foreign languages; as needed, will catalog monographs and other research materials.  Creates MARC authority records.  Contributes authority records to the LC/NACO Authority File.
  3. Partners with the Acquisitions Librarian and branch staff to manage the ordering and payment activity for serials.  Works with colleagues to integrate acquisitions and pricing data with bibliographic data.  Supervises one library technician who orders subscriptions and processes vendor invoices. 
  4. Collaborates with SIL staff on the access and cataloging of electronic journals and resources.  Participates in the development and maintenance of SIL’s web-based E-Resource Management System. Monitors trends in e-resource management and recommends changes to existing tools and workflows as appropriate. Manages the integration and quality control of any vendor-supplied serial records with the Libraries’ catalog. 
  5. Collaborates with Digital Services staff to provide support for electronic and digital collections, including Smithsonian Research Online (SRO), SI’s digital repository, and other various image and resource collections.  Provides metadata advice and expertise for digital collections and projects.
  6. Works with SIL colleagues to support Interlibrary Loan activities as needed.
  7. Provides documentation, training and quality control for work performed by contract staff involving serials.
  8. Participates in library committees, task forces, and special projects.
  9. Maintains current awareness of national and international trends and developments affecting the cataloging of continuing resources.  Attends professional meetings and workshops to monitor changes in standards and practices for the management of print and electronic serials.

 

Qualifications

  1. Ability to supervise a diverse staff.
  2. Skill with automated check-in systems and serials processing.
  3. Knowledge of MARC cataloging on OCLC and in an Integrated Library System (ILS) according to current national cataloging standards, principles, and practices, in addition to non-MARC cataloging and description.
  4. Knowledge of reading at least one language other than English with good proficiency and a working knowledge of other foreign languages sufficient for cataloging and maintenance of serials and monographs.
  5. Ability to manage print and electronic subscriptions, along with disseminating pricing and availability data.
  6. Knowledge of current activities and trends in the description and management of electronic collections, journals and resources: aggregators, discovery systems, the ANSI/NISO OpenURL framework standard, link resolver software and services, and other initiatives that provide and enhance access. 
  7. Skill with standard desktop applications such as MS Word, Excel, and MS Access.
  8. Ability with written and oral communication skills as shown by written communication, reports, proposals, publications, or public presentations.
