University Libraries
The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries seeks applications and nominations for the position of Collection Development Officer (CDO). Reporting to the dean of University Libraries, the CDO directs and coordinates the collection development program. The Collection Development Officer performs the following duties:
· Manages the Libraries’ approval plan in collaboration with bibliographers
· Selects and approves orders for electronic resources, new serials and monographic collections
· Works with vendors and publishers to negotiate pricing and license terms for electronic resources
· Plans collections budgets and develops budget reports and analysis including projections and needs assessments
· Works with bibliographers to maintain and update the Collection Development Policies and Procedures
· Meets and communicates as needed with academic faculty and administrators
· Participates in the construction of the annual acquisitions budget of approximately $3 million and monitors its expenditure
· Provides timely information on fund allocations, expenditures and procedures to collection development bibliographers, academic departmental faculty liaisons and others
· Manages the Libraries’ scholarly communication activities, promoting them and serving as a resource on copyright and licensing issues in the Libraries and on campus
· Serves on the Libraries’ Management Group, participating in strategic planning and evaluation of library services and resources
· Serves on other committees within the libraries and across campus as required

Qualifications
Required
· MLS from an ALA-accredited institution or international equivalent;
· At least three years of experience in collection development in an academic or research library;
· Demonstrated successful experience with the principles and practices of collection management including collection assessment and data analysis;
· Knowledge of current collection development issues and trends at academic and research libraries, including understanding of emerging information technologies and its applications for collection management;
· Familiarity with, and interest in promoting, the emerging field of scholarly communication, open access and academic publishing;
· Experience with managing electronic resources, particularly licensing issues;
· Supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to manage librarians to work successfully in a team environment;
· Demonstrated experience in successful budget management;
· Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
· Ability to work effectively and creatively in a culturally diverse, technologically complex and rapidly changing library and university system.
Preferred
· Experience with scholarly communication;
· Substantive course work or secondary degree in an academic field;
· Experience with Innovative Interfaces Inc. integrated library system
· Knowledge of MARC cataloging standards and serials management
Appointment rank and salary
Rank: This is a non-tenure track, clinical faculty position - to be hired at the assistant or associate professor level depending upon qualifications and experience.
Salary: Preferred hiring range is $50,000 to $60,000 depending upon qualifications and experience.
