AIP and Edanz Work to Support Authors

Local support to researchers in China and Japan to benefit scientific community worldwide

Melville, NY, March 21, 2011 - The American Institute of Physics (AIP) (www.aip.org) and Edanz Group Ltd. (http://edanzediting.com/aip1) today signed an understanding to make it easier and more cost-effective for AIP authors to use Edanz's English language editing services, providing local support for authors in China and Japan.

"AIP is firmly committed to providing meaningful assistance to our authors," said Mark Cassar, Publisher for AIP Journals. "To do this, we must be able to offer them exceptional services in their own language and in their own time zone. Edanz's team of professionals will help our authors enhance the written quality and presentation of their manuscripts, which will benefit all parties in the publication chain."

Edanz offers the services of experienced native English-speaking editors with expertise in the diverse scientific fields that are included in AIP's publishing portfolio. Edanz will edit manuscripts for those authors who request help in preparing their papers for submission to AIP journals.  In addition, Edanz can also provide assistance to authors for related activities such as writing cover letters and responding to peer review comments. Edanz will offer a 10% discount to AIP authors.

"The opening of AIP's Beijing office in 2010 clearly showed AIP's recognition of the important scientific research taking place in Asia today," said Kerry Greer, President of Edanz Group Ltd. "As the only international English-language scientific editing service fully localized in China, Edanz is well placed to support AIP's authors in this important and growing market." AIP and Edanz will also coordinate joint training programs on effective communication of scientific research.

Journal of Laser Applications Incorporates Robust Functionality of AIP's Scitation Platform

Laser Institute of America's flagship journal offers new suite of features

Melville, NY, March 21, 2011 - AIP Publishing, a division of the American Institute of Physics (AIP) (www.aip.org), today announced the re-launch of the Laser Institute of America's Journal of Laser Applications (JLA) (jla.aip.org) on AIP's innovative Scitation hosting platform.  As part of a new strategic partnership agreement between the Laser Institute of America (LIA) and AIP, LIA designated AIP to publish their flagship journal on behalf of the society.

"AIP's powerful Scitation platform enables us to better serve our readers, raise the profile of our organization, and reinforce our commitment to disseminate the knowledge of laser applications and laser safety worldwide," said LIA Executive Director, Peter Baker. "Making our content available to more users and making it more useable can only serve to enhance the strong reputation that JLA has built over the years."

Scitation has infused JLA with a broad range of interactive features, helping users find the content they need more quickly. Researchers will discover redesigned abstract pages, including related articles, article outlines, and an article objects tab, which provides direct access to tables and figures.  New table of contents pages offer expandable abstracts and keywords. JLA users will also benefit from enhanced search functions, including faceted results and intuitive search suggestions, which filter results and help them find relevant information more quickly.

In addition, JLA now features dynamic full-text HTML, including a slide-out navigation bar, inline links to references, and inline search, which reveals lists of popular related articles.  JLA now also offers a streamlined mobile version of its website.

"We believe that LIA's Journal of Laser Applications will grow from strength to strength backed by the power of enhanced discoverability and innovative engineering found in AIP's Scitation hosting platform," said Robert Harington, Publisher, AIP Partnerships.

First published in 1988, Journal of Laser Applications has long been a major forum for the exchange of ideas and information on the diverse applications of photonic technology, including materials processing, laser safety, and sensing and measurement.

Gale Commits Three More Collections to the Portico Archive

Follows Portico's Successful Preservation of 80 Million Files from Eighteenth Century Collections Online, The Making of Modern Law and Eight Other Gale Collections

Farmington Hills, Mich. and Princeton, NJ, March 23, 2011 — Gale, part of Cengage Learning, and Portico, part of the not-for-profit organization ITHAKA, today announced Gale will be preserving three additional digital historical collections with Portico. This follows the completed ingest of 10 Gale Digital Collections—including 19th Century U.S. Newspapers, The Making of Modern Law: Primary Resources and Eighteenth Century Collections Online—and represents over 80 million files (75 million pages of content), which doubled the size of the Portico archive in just one year.

“We are excited to expand our agreement with Portico,” said Frank Menchaca, executive vice president and publisher, Gale. “With more and more content moving online and being produced in digital-only format, we realize the importance of ensuring our unparalleled content and collections will remain accessible to our customers even in the unlikely event of a service disruption.”

The three additional Gale collections being committed to the Portico archive comprise over one million files, and include Dictionary of Literary Biography, Something About the Author Online and Literature Criticism Online. With the addition of these collections, the total number of files being preserved from Gale in the Portico archive will reach over 82 million, representing an achievement of scale for Portico. Collections preserved in 2010 include:

·         Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) and ECCO Part II, New Editions

·         The Making of Modern Law: Legal Treatises

·         The Making of Modern Law: Trials

·         The Making of Modern Law: Supreme Court Records and Briefs

·         Making of the Modern World: Goldsmiths’-Kress Library of Economic Literature

·         Sabin Americana

·         19th Century British Library Newspapers

·         17th Century Burney Collection Newspapers

·         18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers

·         19th Century U.S. Newspapers

“Portico’s successful ingest of the first 10 collections, totaling over 11 terabytes, is a great accomplishment in our history,” said Eileen Fenton, Portico managing director. “It represents the progress we have made in the scalability of our workflow. We are delighted to continue this work with Gale to ensure the long term preservation and permanent access of this vital content for its customers.”

In accordance with Portico’s D-Collections Service model, Portico will make the content available to Gale’s customers under specifically defined circumstances called “trigger events.” Should the content no longer be made available through the Gale system or from other sources, or if Gale were to experience an extended service interruption, Portico would make the content preserved in the archive available to Gale’s customers. There is no charge from Gale to its customers for this service.
