Hi,

We are using the 2-record approach.  We use the Innovative ERM in conjunction with the link resolver SFX to generate brief bibliographic and checkin (holding) records for our electronic journals.

If an e-journal is a one-off subscription through our subscription agent, a current order record is attached to that title.  For aggregators & packages, there would be one order record for an entire resource, attached to a bib and soft-linked to the resource record.

In the case of a journal title going from print to online only through the subscription agent, we would change the print order record status to “fully paid”, enter appropriate notes, and create a new order record that will attach to the electronic bib.  The new order record will have an electronic instead of print fund.

One important extra task here is to update the order record info in the subscription agent’s system.  If we didn’t change the order record number and fund, there would be a big mess when trying to reconcile the big annual renewal.

We do full cataloging of e-journal bibs for titles on stable platforms/packages like JSTOR and Project Muse, but don’t bother with titles exclusive to aggregators.  Occasionally there is an expensive and important one-off e-journal title, like “Science”, which we would fully catalog. The ERM coverage load process doesn’t overlay full bibs so there’s no danger of brief bibs replacing full cataloging.

Hope this helps,

Subject: [SERIALST] Switching print journals to online-only

We are beginning to switch more of our print journal titles to online and need to come up with coherent procedures for making the change.  I would be interested in hearing from others about how they do this.

Do you catalog the new format as a new title, or do you use the existing bibliographic record?  Do you close the order for the print title and create a new order for the online version, or do you adapt the print order record to reflect the new situation?

Thanks for your input.

Joe
