Thanks to all you responded to my request for input on inter-filing periodicals with the main collection.  It was extremely informative and helped us convince our director to at least consider the repercussions more deeply.  He isn’t completely convinced we shouldn’t do it but has acknowledged that it won’t provide the results he is looking for.

In summary; most people thought it was a bad idea (little to no return for a HUGE investment); a few had just done the reverse and removed the periodicals from main in order to free up valuable shelf space; and very few said they did it and were happy.

We already have the periodicals classified using LC, so that was helpful in convincing the director that we can help educate the students that they can “virtually” browse the catalog by call #, which we will then supplement by putting dummy boxes in the main collection for the appropriate periodical title for when they are retrieving the books.

Thanks to everyone for all your insight – I learn so much by being on this list!
