Mindy,

I’m sure it would depend on the type of slanted shelving you get, but we can get probably 12 to 20 issues stacked up behind there before they start to fall all over each other depending on the thickness of each issue. We had some very old wood slanted shelving that worked for years. When someone in our business office needed a project and decided to re-decorate the library. They got rid of the wood shelves and purchased fake laminate cases with flimsy metal shelving. Don’t get this type. It sticks and/or falls apart. Can’t tell you the brand because we didn’t order it. You can get modular shelving for it for newspapers with a bar that goes across the front (they will break and fall off in about a week). Other shelves have slots to put dividers into (we didn’t get the dividers and don’t have any use for these shelves, they don’t lift up like the rest of the shelves). And there are end racks that hang off the ends of the cabinets to hold more issues (we actually do use these but there is no storage space anywhere for old issues for these titles).

I don’t know if there are better shelves out there but certainly ask around before you purchase as you’ve done here, and go look at other libraries. Time for a road trip!

Subject: [SERIALST] Current Periodicals Display

Hi,

We have recently removed compact shelving from our Periodicals floor to create space for a learning commons.  We are considering taking our more popular magazines out of the “Current Periodicals” section and displaying them out in the learning commons area on slanted typed shelving to display them better.

I’m wondering about potential storage problems.  We currently keep unbound issues of titles such as Time, Newsweek, etc. until the microfilm reel is received.  For those of you that have the slanted type periodical shelves, how many issues can you store behind the slanted shelves?

Thanks,
