Liane,
1) We used to have students
check in serials but that job is now mine. Even when we had student workers
doing that they did not extrapolate boxes or change frequencies. They simply
reported problems to me and I made the changes. We generally only have students
for two or three years and the training involved didn’t seem worth it
especially since they could have done some real damage to the records at that
level of authority.
2) We stopped checking in
dailies as well. The only problem I’ve found is that you never know when a
subscription falters for any reason. Usually a shelving student reports the
problem if they notice a daily hasn’t arrived for a couple of months and we
then make contact with the vendor. All of our dailies are discarded after a
time and we apparently aren’t concerned with gaps in the collection, so if you
have a reliable method of knowing that a subscription has stopped then you
could free up some time in not checking them in as long as you’re not worried
about missing an issue here and there.

Subject: [SERIALST] Students Editing Checkin Cards & Dailies Checkin
Hello all,
Two questions for the group. We’d appreciate any experience and insight you can
share.
1)
We’re
looking at having students add new boxes on the checkin card for expected
issues and also edit checkin cards when publications change frequency, rather
than forward these tasks to a supervisor. We're interested to know if any other
institutions have trained their student assistants to do this work, and if so,
how it did or has been working out. We use III, but these tasks are similar
across most ILSes. I’ve also posted this question on the III users listserv.
2)
We’re
looking at stopping checkin of dailies. The last informal survey done on
SERIALST of daily checkin that I could find was in 2007. We’re interested to
know if, since then, anyone has experienced problems with NOT checking in
dailies.
Thanks,
Liane
