ABOUT THE COMMERCIAL DIGEST

SERIALST Commercial Digest pilot project: Since June 2008, the SERIALST moderators have been experimenting with compiling and distributing a Commercial Digest once a week, on Friday afternoons, with messages containing informational content from commercial bodies (i.e., publishers, vendors, agents, etc.). The moderators review submitted messages for informational content that may interest our subscribers. We reserve the right to reject messages that are purely for advertising or product/service solicitation, with little or no informational content beyond the solicitation, as well as other content that are not within the scope and purpose guidelines of SERIALST
(see: http://www.uvm.edu/~bmaclenn/serialst.html)

If you have thoughts or feedback about the Commercial digest, or other aspects of SERIALST, please let us hear from you. Contact information for the SERIALST moderators is at:

1.  Tour of Bindery at ALA

Boston is hosting the ALA Midwinter Meeting in January, 2010, and Bridgeport National Bindery, Inc. would like to extend an invitation to tour our facility located in Western Massachusetts.  We will provide bus transportation from Boston to our location and back.   The tentative schedule is to depart Boston at noon, tour the bindery, and return to Boston by 5:00.

You will see our library binding, conservation, and digitization services.  You will also tour our innovative print on demand operation.

The tour will be on Friday, January 15, 2010.  We wanted to announce this event early to enable people to plan their travel accordingly.

Please RSVP to Brian Baird at brianb@bnbindery.com so we can get a count of who plans to attend.  This will aid us in scheduling a proper sized bus, and preparing refreshments.

 Thanks!

 Brian Baird

A New Application lets Researchers Download and Store AIP Journal Articles to
their iPhone or iPod Touch

MELVILLE, NY, October 8, 2009 - Journal articles on various topics, ranging
from applied and chemical physics to renewable energy, are now available on
Apple iPhone and Apple iPod touch devices. The American Institute of Physics
(AIP) (www.aip.org), one of the world's largest publishers of information in the
physical sciences and a leader in the field of electronic publishing, announced
the launch today of its new mobile e-Reader application, iResearch. iResearch
was developed to provide physicists, engineers, scientists, and students, with
mobile access to valuable physics journal content. Users may access iResearch
via the Apple iTunes store to download the application for version 3.0 and
higher.

”iResearch is an important part of AIP's strategy to bring our content closer
to end users and provide researchers worldwide with access to information
wherever and whenever they need it,” said James Wonder, director of emerging
technology, American Institute of Physics. “This new application further
reinforces AIP’s position as a leading technology provider in STM publishing,
and showcases the potential of our new Scitation C3 hosting platform
infrastructure.”

In addition to readily accessing AIP content through a Wi-Fi network or
cellular connection, iResearch enables users to optionally save files in PDF
format on their iPhone or iPod touch for offline viewing.

Scitation C3 allows AIP to load its journal articles directly, combining XML
content, documents, and books into a single, centralized repository. This has
helped the Institute avoid costly and time-consuming content transformations.
AIP can now react with even greater agility when creating new applications like
iResearch, which extend the value of its information by making it accessible to
users in a wide range of delivery options.

The journals available in the iResearch application include: Applied Physics
Letters, Biomicrofluidics, Chaos, Journal of Applied Physics, The Journal of
Chemical Physics, Journal of Mathematical Physics, Journal of Physical and
Chemical Reference Data, Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Low
Temperature Physics, Physics of Fluids, Physics of Plasmas, and Review of
Scientific Instruments.

Download the application at http://www.apple.com/itunes/. For application
support, visit http://scitation.aip.org/iphone.
