This is an important and very interesting conversation.
It's pretty interesting to think of statistics, mostly because of how statistics benefit industry (content providers). Actually, in keeping the statistics relatively hard to achieve there is absolutely no third party evidence for the purchase or non-purchase of any given product, as incentive I am sure that some content producers have usage stats as a selling point. It would actually make sense (a great deal) if we refused to by anything that was not counter compliant.
I love the idea that an independent party creates the standard, so I think that the simplest way to deal with the problem is to keep counter compliance in mind, use it and don't report anything else.
This is a way to register your vote for third party information on usage and that has to be a great thing for everyone.
Without the third party verification the product/statistics lacks validity.
