George,

I noticed the same thing (trees being cut), and had a similar experience the weekend before last, when I did the Nature Coast Trail.  Two men had a pickup parked on the pavement, collecting (for firewood, I assume?) the cut pieces of wood, and blocking most of the path, which made for a difficult passage.

They seemed oblivious to the fact that this is a bike path.
