Re: GCCMail: charge the driver Huan Dinh 30 Aug 2006 18:41 EDT

Unfortunately the "3 feet" law doesn't necessary protect us from this kind
of mishap, however, a harsher punishment will make motorists be more
respectful/careful around cyclists on the road. This should be push for an
involuntary manslaughter charge or vehicular manslaughter charge. Either
charge will mandate some jail time. If you are around Gville a long time
like me, then you'd remember Tom Hayes III who was killed on 441 when a
driver fell asleep, drifted into a bike lane, and rear ended Tom. That
driver got away with a careless driving ticket, $500 fine, and 22 hrs of
community services. A life of a person only worth $500 and a silly fine?
We have people in jail for a lot less of a crime like possession of an
illegal substance. Please let me know if I can help in any way. Thanks.

Hopefully, but in my past experience personal contact works best. We
should consider "hand to hand" contact with those who can influence their
drivers.

Do you think G-ville Sun would do a "safety awareness" piece around the
new law in the wake of this tragedy?

Great, we have one month to actively make the new law common knowledge.
I'll help in any way I can. let me know how.

Last summer the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that the new 3-feet
clearance law goes into effect on October 1, 2006.

When does the "3 foot clearance law' go into effect? We've been getting

I'd like to start reporting the incidents to the vehicle owners.

This is a sad but not unpredictable incident. I'd bet the "distraction"
was a cell phone.

I wonder what he would have been charged if he drifted left into the
path of a car full of kids?
  Makes you wonder?

Whew, the driver is being charged with "failure to drive in a straight
line", how about vehicular manslaughter? Our thoughts and prayers go out
to the family left behind.
