An Arizona man participating in a weeklong cycling event throughout Alachua County was killed Wednesday when his bicycle was hit by a motorist on Newberry Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Dead is Robert Paul King, 65, of Prescott, Ariz., FHP stated in a media release.
The accident happened at 12:42 p.m. Wednesday on Newberry Road about a half-mile east of Northwest 298th Street in Newberry.
King was cycling eastbound on the paved shoulder when he was hit by Brian Patrick Bunting, 23, of Newberry. FHP states that Bunting was eastbound in a 1999 Ford F-250 pickup when he drifted onto the shoulder and hit Kingâs Cannondale bike.
King was taken to Shands at the University of Florida, where he pronounced dead, FHP stated. Charges are pending.
King was participating in Bike Florida on a route that began in High Springs, traveled through Trenton and was ending in Newberry.
Bike Florida is an annual event that, this year, is being held in Alachua and neighboring counties.
