GCCMail: Development Ride, Season Two ("Return of the Teaching Moment") james thompson 30 Mar 2010 16:40 EDT

Riders,

The Development Ride: Season Two ("Return of the Teaching Moment")
will leave each Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. sharp from the parking lot of
Chain Reaction Bikes. If you are an experienced rider, this is a
great recovery or basic fitness ride that gives you an opportunity to
return some of your wisdom to a new flock of roadies. Mentoring is
_required_ of experienced riders, and you are extremely welcome on the
rides. If you are an inexperienced group rider with basic fitness and
want some gentle but thorough instruction, this ride is for you. This
is not yet an official GCC ride, but we hope to make it one.

As a reminder:

"Developmental Rides" typically average 1.5 to 2.0 hours of riding,
depending on the sunset. Riders are responsible for their own safety
and that of their gear. No one is left behind ("No Drop"). Drop bar
road bikes are required, and blinking rear lamps are recommended for
occasional late returns following flats. Speeds average around
17-18mph, so you need to be slightly fit, but not fast. If you can
ride 16mph by yourself, you will easily be able to ride in a group at
18mph. Our rides are famously free of ego and testosterone. Based on
the composition of the group, we do occasionally practice short,
announced, and non-mandatory intermediate competitive tactics. We
always regroup afterwards, and besides its fun to watch even if you're
not into displays of speed. Experienced riders must proactively
engage with newer riders at all times, helping them learn safety,
etiquette, and communicating well with others. We always ride a
double pace line, because it is safer, more sociable, and prepares you
for the ride culture of the Greater Gainesville road cycling
community. Helmets are required. No aero bars.

Look forward to seeing you there,

James Thompson
