GCCMail: Loss of Trees Along the Nature Coast Trail
George Edwards 03 Dec 2007 09:43 EST
Dear Friends:
Lee and I noticed Saturday that Progress Energy is removing most of the
shade trees on the South side of the Nature Coast Trail just West of
Trenton. Shade is too scarce along parts of this Trail as it is, and
the virtually clear-cutting between the Trail and SR26 is going to make
things pretty uncomfortable on hot, sunny days. Besides, the crowns of
the trees are far below the power lines, so what's the purpose?
Probably the result of a low-level manager hiring a tree service
contractor and failing to provide adequate supervision, which is how
blunder like this often get started.
I don't think there would be much response to our complaining to
Progress Energy at the local or regional level, so I have appealed to
the Chairman, Bob McGehee, at their HQ in Raleigh. I suggest all of GCC
do the same. The contact info. is Robert B. McGehee, Chairman, Progress
Energy, 411 Fayetteville Street, Raleigh NC 27602. If you email me I
will send you a copy of my letter to use as a model. Be polite but firm
that this kind of destruction is harmful to trail users, the local
economy (because we will choose to ride other trails), and damaging to
Progress Energy's public image. I plan to send my letter by some method
that is both trackable and requires his signature, so I know he saw it,
not some flunky.
Go gettem, guys!
George
