GCCMail: Talking Points for 16th/23rd Meeting Tonight james thompson 15 Dec 2010 10:10 EST

Cycling Advocates,

One last push to encourage you to come out tonight for the public
meeting concerning 16th/23rd Corridor redevelopment. This is part of
our ongoing club effort to become more involved in cycling advocacy
and planning. Just being there gives support to those of us who have
been following this issue. I do encourage you to speak, and if you do
so, here are some suggested talking points based on our recent meeting
with the Bike-Ped Advisory Board and our support for "Option 4" of the
Development Plan:

1. "Option 4" is a compromise solution that county engineers do not
believe will endanger drivers and will not prevent the practice of
riding on the sidewalk if one chooses.

2. "Option 4" is only a painted gutter with signage, not a bike lane.
It minimally impacts the turn lane and u-turn radius.

3. BPAB would like to see a lane reduction and advised such, but it
does not oppose Option 4.

4. This is an important legacy decision. We want our kids to be able
to say that Mom and Dad and their neighbors made it safe for adult
cyclists to obey the law by riding on the road and not impeding
pedestrians and cars.

5. While some people have written letters to the Gville Sun
supporting cycling on sidewalks, their examples suggest they do not
ride bikes as commuters. The nearly 5,000 people that ride their
bikes to work each day, according to the U. S. Census, reduce traffic
for those on the road, but they need the roadways to do it. Vehicular
cycling doesn't work on sidewalks.

See you there,

James Thompson
Advocacy Director
Commuter Committee Member
