Let me put my two cents in:

As you all do, I ride a bicycle regularly, but have been confining my
excursions for the past two years mostly to rail trails, with the
exception of an occasional very early Sunday morning ride on local
roads. I have done so because of increasing traffic and aggressive,
indifferent, and inattentive drivers. On a few occasions, like most of
you, I have had some very close calls with cars, and was even hit
several years ago.

I also ride a motorcycle (about 14,000 miles per year) and have also
been subject to the same kind of dangerous and destructive driver
behavior. The American Motorcyclist Association is now sponsoring
legislation throughout the country which would severely penalize drivers
of this kind who injure and kill other road users--and the laws (some
have been passed) also apply to bicyclists and pedestrians.

Perhaps as bicyclists we can make common cause with this effort to enact
laws which will protect all road users, because the situation can only
get worse.

For those interested, below is the section of the AMA website dealing
with this type of legislation.
