GCCMail: 200 Km Brevet this Saturday Jim Wilson 09 Jan 2008 21:39 EST

Riders,

If you're allergic to dirt like I am, don't forget the Club's brevet
series kicks off this weekend with our shortest ride: 200 kilometers
(125 miles).

This is one of the flattest 200s in the USA and so it is a very gentle
introduction to the world of Randonneuring. We leave Westside Park at
the crack of dawn, and you should be back well before sunset.

Details on the club website or directly from:

	http://www.afn.org/~wilson/brevets.html

Well, it is too cold, too cloudy, too much wind from the wrong direction,
etc - so let's do Cheese Wheeler stadiums for our off season training!
We'll be doing this until the first week of March.

Meet at the 50 yard line on the east side of the stadium at 5:30 pm to run,
walk, or crawl your way up and down. Good cross training, and good way to
burn off those holiday pounds!

We had a good turnout last night - will see you all again this coming
Monday and Wednesday!
Doug

I had no idea of the severe loss of trees on the Nature Coast Trail. I talked to Progress Energy supervisors and staff from the Greenway & Trails. Both said nothing can be done to stop the destruction. They plan on clear cutting all the way to Cross City and were vague if this project will impact the Chiefland leg.

Is there any one with ideas on how to get an injunction to stop this travesty. There has to be another option.

Think of the money, time and good will it took to get this Rails to Trails built. Now to have the Nature removed from the Nature Coast Trail !!! They are blowing the chips from the downed trees across the trail and on to the living foliage. Yesterday, the dust from the saw dust on the area that is now denuded was in my breathing space. God only know it the sawdust will blank out sunlight and negatively impact the remaining trees.

Even at the shade stops they removed every tree. I had to lay my bike in the dirt.

Do we have a photo journalist that is looking for a good story. Think of the negative publicity this could do for Progress Energy if someone could get the press.

In today's word there has to be a way so get Progress Energy to develop another plan. Part of the Trail still has a tree canopy. But something has to happed now if anything is to be saved.

I went all the way on the trail (Trenton to Fanning Springs and the River Bridge) through the contruction worker's path (they have their huge trucks, etc. parked on the trail) so walking is the only way through the destruction. I wanted to see what was happening.

Does anyone have contacts within our State Government?

I'll be gald to help. I just can not imagine how this happened. If Greenway & Trails can not protect this Trail or even the shade at the rest stops how can they protect the other Rails to Trails paths under their management. Or has this already happened on other trails. My heart is very sad and I am very upset.

 Tootie

Take care.

Hi Danny!

I think the article was interesting and it got me thinking about a few
things. I learned about bike boxes recently, let me include a couple links
that have pictures of the bike boxes in action.

http://www.bta4bikes.org/btablog/2006/07/25/bike-box-in-action/

I was curious about what everyone else thought about the utility of these
boxes in Gainesville. Would they be a benefit to cyclists or motorists?
Besides the cost of a new paint job on the road (I'm sure the cost of these
paints is not trivial) I cant imagine many other costs incurred. I feel the
safety they would provide for motorists / cyclists is a much better way to
spend money then on the faux bricks we've got at many intersections. How
many times have you been turning in one of these intersections and had your
bike wheels lose traction?

I'm also curious if this type of accident (or almost accident!) is common
among the riders here. Something that happens to me often is a vehicle that
is already in motion trying to turn into me at an intersection that does not
have a traffic light (a vehicle turning into a shopping center or housing
development for example).

So.... any thoughts anyone?

Richard

I guess this sort of relates but I took notice on my commute to work
this morning on NW 6th Street. I saw the nice shoulder (not designated
as a bike path) that the shoulder disappears - goes right to paved
road. I await to see if the 2.3 mile track, beginning at NW 16th Ave
and going by NW 6th ever comes about. I would take it myself but need
to figure a "safe" way to connect from NW 53rd Ave.

Best,
Beth Knizer

Well, it is too cold, too cloudy, too much wind from the wrong direction,
etc - so let's do Cheese Wheeler stadiums for our off season training!
We'll be doing this until the first week of March.

Meet at the 50 yard line on the east side of the stadium at 5:30 pm to run,
walk, or crawl your way up and down. Good cross training, and good way to
burn off those holiday pounds!

We had a good turnout last night - will see you all again this coming
Monday and Wednesday!
Doug

I tried to put in my 2 cents with the city before on the faux brick. I ser=
iously think it is the BIGGEST WASTE OF MONEY. In addition to riding a bic=
ycle, I also ride a motorcycle. I personally have slid many times on the m=
otorcycle and a few times on a bicycle going around the corner and on the f=
aux brick. My cousin crashed his motorcycle going less than 10 mph around =
the corner and broke his arm in 2 places. He too has a titanium plate in h=
is forearm like me courtesy of our, once again, screwed up road paving/main=
tenance. I would really like to know if there is some kind of public forum=
/hearing about the faux brick, so I can go to it.
