GCCMail: Smoke on the Trail George Edwards 15 Mar 2010 15:29 EDT

Dear Friends:

We are advised by the Staff at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park that
one or more prescribed burns are planned adjacent to the
Gainesville-Hawthorne Trail over the next "several days or weeks".
There will be fire equipment, personnel, and possibly smoke on the
Trail, and these factors may require closing the Trail temporarily for
the safety of crew and cyclists. The Rangers promise to post signs on
the day of the burn, or the day before if possible.

Understand that such burns depend on weather conditions, and the
issuance of a burn permit by the Div. of Forestry - plus being able to
muster enough personnel to keep things in hand. Please be on the
lookout for warning signs, and cooperate with these hardworking
firefighters when you meet them on the Trail. And thank them for their
efforts.

Needless to say, fire is a key element in maintaining the native Florida
ecosystem, and such fires are necessary to keeping the Real Florida
real. Any question, call me at 333.3184 and I will get answers.

For information on daily fire status, call the Ranger Station at 466.3397.

Cheers,

George
