Re: GCCMail: FW: Why you were laying on the road foxally@xxxxxx 05 Aug 2009 12:17 EDT

To all,

Although I have also stopped on occasion to clear a branch or similar obstacle from the road while cycling, proposing to make trash cleanup an expected part of participating in group rides is, in my opinion, setting people up for injury (as in, getting injured by a car while stopping, over and over, to pick up debris). If the route is that hazardous, why not call FDOT, or the County, or whoever has responsibility for keeping that particular public road clean, and see if they will send a crew out? Or, maybe choose another route, same as you would do when road construction creates an obvious hazard?
If Team Florida rides this road frequently, maybe they should look into learing whether it is available for Adopt-A-Road adoption, and regular scheduled trash pickups by a group of concerned citizens? Better to pick up the trash while on foot, and not on your bike, and with proper signage up to notify motorists and safety vests (as those who come out for our GCC Adopt-a-Road cleanups will know about).
I definitely wouldn't promote encouraging groups of cyclists out onto roads that are known to be hazardous, and then ask them to risk injury doing trash cleanup at the same time. Why invite trouble? Just a thought.
