  I spoke with the poster of the original e-mail.
A used bicycle has been obtained.  Contributions
for fixing the bike up and buying the basic supplies,
(helmet, patch kit, etc.), are being accepted at the
Bike Route.

  As far as verifying the story... Well, I am going to
kick in some cash.  Please note that the original e-mail
was asking for a used bike to buy, not a contribution
solicitation.  We kinda took that and ran with it.  I can
confirm that the rider who posted the original e-mail is
a retired Army captain.
