Subject: Ride America for Safe Routes (Gainesville Stop - Feb 14 County
Commission)
Importance: High

Jeanie Ward-Waller is organizing a cross country bicycle awareness
campaign for Safe Routes to School (SR2S) and League of American Bicyclists
(LAB) programs/projects. The group will stop for a Gainesville visit on
Tuesday, February 14, 2012 to share about the effort at the County
Commission meeting, during the 5:30 pm Public Comment section. If you are
interested in viewing, tune in to channel 12 or check back at the County
website for archive meeting videos once posted. If you or your group
affiliation would like to make a public comment on the ride group or your
SR2S / LAB experience in our community, please consider attending the
meeting and making a public comment during the 5:30 pm allotted time.

Here is information on the ride:

-Four ambitious women are undertaking a cross country endurance ride that
will kick off in Key West on February 5, 2012 and culminate in San Francisco
in late April.

-Two sisters, Jeanie and Chelsea Ward-Waller, their mother, Jane, and close
friend Stephanie Palmer are riding across America to benefit the bicycle
safety advocacy efforts of the League of American Bicyclists and the Safe
Routes to School National Partnership. Dubbed "Ride America for Safe Routes"
(RASR), their ride follows a route traversing 13 southern states and 20
major cities, logging over 5,000 miles between Florida and California.

-The mission of RASR is to raise $50,000 for the League's Bike Friendly
America program and for Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs in local
communities. In addition, the RASR Team will advocate the critical need for
bike safety and promote the public health benefits of bicycling through
events with local bicycle groups and SRTS programs in communities along
their route.

-See the RASR website at http://rideforsaferoutes.blogspot.com or contact
rideforsaferoutes@xxxxxxxxx for more information on the Ride and to support
a future of bike-friendly communities. Come out and ride with the RASR
riders in Gainesville on February 14, 2012. We plan to be in Gainesville on
Feb 14 and then ride to Jacksonville the next day.
