For those of you still waiting on accurate six-gap times, here's the
explanation :

Subject: Good times - bad times

After the Six Gap Century you inquired about updated times either for the
start/finish or for the actual climb time for Hog Pen. Due to a couple of
problems we will not have these times this year. Two separate problems arose
which will be corrected in the future but unfortunately can't be fixed for
this year
1- Actual exact start times (versus single start for all competitors).
This problem was caused by the decoder (the box that reads the times)
software "locking up". We returned this box to the
company and they sent it to Holland to be fixed. There was a hope of the
times being recovered but it did not happen. This problem is an ongoing
problem with the system, which rarely happens but seems we were lucky. Had
we known it was a possibility, we could have imported the times to our
computer (as opposed to leaving them in the decoder memory) as riders
crossed the start. This will be done in the future. But from what I
understand this isn't likely to happen again anyway. Fortunately we brought
an additional decoder and exchanged it to capture the finish times.

2- The climb time box battery went dead. Sheesh! While one of the
boxes worked fine, the other didn't. This was totally operator error (not
Lily Tomlin) for not checking the connections
which jarred loose in shipping from Utah. This was a new "trackside box" "
developed for remote location timing like Hog Pen. We checked everything
out the day before (we thought) and probably used it just enough to run the
batteries down. All that back up power we had plugged in did nothing since
the charger wasn't plugged.

The AMB Timing system we use is the best in the industry. Initially
developed for Radio Controlled Car Racing the company graduated to Formula 1
and now provide the active transponder system you used. Both AMB and us are
committed to providing the best possible timing available and next year we
will not only provide you with exact start times, but we hope to provide
climb times for each climb.

Thanks
