Wow, what a disturbing study.  Not good news for us balding guys.  You can buy baseball hats with fake ponytails  sewn in so maybe our local bike shops should start selling helmets the same way.
Personally, I like to twitch my bike out and back a little as I see a car about to pass me.  This usually gets their attention and they give me a little more room.  Either that or they figure I'm drunk or crazy and we all give those people a wide berth anyway.
