GCC's best picnic of the year, the famous Chilly Chili Picnic will be at Oleno State Park on Saturday, Jam. 18. Ride leaders may want to organize rides from the park. Food will begin about noon.
The Club will provide soft drinks and a giant pot of mild, inoffensive chili. Club members are asked to bring exotic chili's or a side dish such as salad or dessert;
Oleno has many bike riding options as well as hiking. There is a paved trail that goes to Ft. White, the Itchetucknee and on to the Suwannee River. Oleno has gentle, sandy mountain bike trails suitable for family rides. Florida's first Federal road, the Belamey Road, built in 1826, runs through the park and is ridable for hybrid bikes and mountain bikes.
Following lunch, we usually hike the 3 mile trail along historic Wire Road (more than 350 years), walk the route of the underground river, and visit Vinzant Landing, an historic river crossing built by Spanish settlers.
Oleno State Park is 35 miles north of Gainesville on US 441 (8 miles north of High springs) There is an entry fee to the park.
