Call to Action to GCC Members:
I would like to encourage Club members to please
email our Mayor and City Commission now to urge
them to fund 5-year Pedestrian & Bicycle Safety improvement plan. Time is of the essence! The Commission will be meeting next Thursday, so don't delay.
I recently attended 2 meetings of Gainesville Citizens for Active Transportation (GCAT), a small but growing advocacy group working to promote multimodal transportation. If you cycle for transportation, or if you walk or take the bus, you may concur with the proposed improvements listed below, or you may even have specific safety concerns of your own that you would like addressed. I certainly do!
Because I commute daily on roads without bike lanes, where traffic lanes are narrow and where motorists often ignore speed limits, red lights, and stop signs, I am most definitely interested in making my daily cycle-commute as safe as possible. I would welcome any interventions that might promote safer travel for myself and other users of our local roads, bike paths, sidewalks, and bus routes. I have one or 2 ideas of my own that I'd like to suggest, things that are relatively inexpensive and easily done that would promote safer cycling. So, I support this initiative, and I will be emailing the City Commisdion, too.
If you also think that Gainesville could do more to facilitate safer travel by bike, by foot, or by bus, I encourage you to contact the Mayor and City Commission.
Take a moment to read the summary below and let the Mayor and City Commission know that you support safer transportation for all citizens. Email them today.
Thanks,
-Ally Gill
