RIDERS ONLY BIKES>
The Florida Cycling Community lost another member last night. Shawn Smith was critically injured while riding Tuesday around 6:30pm after being hit from behind by a pickup truck near Alachua Tuesday evening. He was wearing a helmet.

He was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital in critical condition before passing away last night. He leaves behind a wife and son.

Shawn’s funeral will be this Monday, May 14, at 10am at:
Greenhouse Church
11200 NW 39th Ave.
Gainesville, FL 32606

A reception will follow at:
The Barn at Rembert Farms
13126 NW 174th Ave.
Alachua, FL  32615

There is also a memorial ride planned at San Felasco this Sunday, May 13th at 5pm.

On May 20th, southeast race promoter, GoneRiding.com, will have a honor Shawn at the ‘6 Hours of Haile’—the race he won just last year.

The first lap of race will be devoted to the memory of Shawn Smith, it will be a silent lap, all riders will stay together at a slow to moderate pace, leaving no one behind.

There is a GoFundMe link below that was originally setup to help with his medical bills and now will go toward his family.

Stay safe, Riders. Always be aware and encourage drivers to do the same. #bikesbelong #bikelivesmatter #rideinpeace #4Shawn

A combo of being second class citizens with also the ease with which you can dehumanize someone on a bike when you're in your car. We aren't people we are objects attached to bikes and we are making people lose half a second in their commute...

Clearly, the law and enforcement of it needs to change concerning cyclists and cars who hit/kill us.

Don’t you normally get arrested when you are directly involved in a death?    Why not in this case?

I think society once again lacks the backbone to do what is morally right, just like in the civil rights

Struggles.  Apparently cyclists are second class citizens under the law.

Totally hit the nail on the head, Francois. The Alligator also wrote a couple of pieces last summer about cyclist fatalities/injuries while riding on NW 13th Street. One article concluded with something like "cyclists should be aware and consider other routes besides NW 13th street." This is unacceptable and insane. We need to communicate with reporters in a way that makes them stop writing pieces as if it's the cyclists' responsibility to not get hit. It's so important, obviously. We need to rise up as a community and demand that people pay attention while driving instead of considering this type of murder as an acceptable risk.

I offer my deepest, most sincere condolences to everyone who knew Shawn.

I posted a picture of the road on my Facebook. It was a very clear day etc. There is perfect visibility. Also, 400ft would still give you ample time to brake even at 100mph ... So either way it's a total BS argument.

I can not agree with you more Huan. It was bright and sunny on that day.

And I'm very assuming to believe this was no accident! This was absolutely avoidable.

The visibility on that road is far greater than 400 feet. Ridiculous, at best!!!

I went to school with Shawn’s wife and only met him twice.

My impression of Shawn was he  is extremely responsible and I understood him to be a skilled cyclist.

I’m stating the obvious when I say, Kevin Kirby was a very negligent driver and I’m beyond angry,

I'm embroiled. This was COMPLETELY AVOIDABLE!!!

Whoever reaches out needs to make it clear that this is not an accident. Accidents are inherently unavailable. These things aren't accidents. Not paying attention when you're driving and killing someone is as much an accident as shooting a gun with closed eyes and killing someone.

Law enforcement, justice, and the press need to understand that these things just aren't accidents.

Off my soap box now.

Though I have ridden with Shawn many times over the years.  I think someone else would be more appropriate to speak with the Gainesville Sun on his behalf.  If someone knows his wife and family, maybe you can talk to them first before speaking with a reporter.  I wanted to be more respectful of his privacy and considered to his wife, son, and family.

Thanks,
Huan

Hi Huan,

My name is Mari Faiello and I am a news reporter for the Gainesville Sun.

I wanted to reach out to you this afternoon about Shawn Smith. I spoke with Roger Pierce this afternoon and he said you two were friends. I know this is probably a tough time for you with his loss being so recent, but I was hoping that we could talk about your relationship with him and what he was like as a person and his impact on the cycling community here in Gainesville.

Again, I’m very sorry for your loss, but I hope we can talk soon. Thank you for your time and feel free to reach me by my cell number listed below.

Respectfully,

Mari Faiello
