Many thanks to GCC members who are also
members of The Friends of San Felasco Citizen Support Organization (CSO). If you
bike or hike at San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park, consider joining,
because your annual membership dues (just $20 for individuals or $30 for
families, with higher levels available) comes with park passes that are worth
more than the dues' amount. For details, go to http://www.sanfelasco.net/membership.shtml.
As part of our membership campaign, CSO
members are invited to TWO special, free events in July, which offer a rare
opportunity to enjoy San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park at
night:
Sat July 20 Sunset/full moon hike. This event is for CSO members (and
their family/guest) only. (Membership applications will be available for those
who wish to join or renew.) Participants should be able to hike
for two hours on uneven terrain with elevation changes. Hiking shoes and a water
bottle are recommended, and although the goal is to enjoy the moonlight, we
recommend you bring a flashlight. Following the hike, popcorn, ice cream, and
drinks will be served. Arrive 7:30 PM, and be ready to hike by 8:00 PM.
Wed July 24 Moonlight
bicycle ride. This event is free for CSO members. (A $5 donation is
requested from others.) Night rides require that you provide your own primary
lights for off-road duty: the brighter, the better. You should also carry a
back-up light in case of emergency. Primary lights should be capable of a
minimum burn time of two hours. Arrive 7:30
PM.
These events are a great way to see
the nocturnal wildlife and escape the Florida heat in the summer. Note that pets are not allowed, and anyone
under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
For
both events, meet at the CSO building at park headquarters at 7:30 PM at 12720 NW 109th Lane, Alachua, Florida
32615-6741. Directions: From Gainesville: Go north on CR
241 and just after the I-75 overpass, turn right on NW 109th Lane. Go 1.1 miles
on NW 109th Lane to a break in a black 4 rail fence on the left (east) side of
the road. At the official state park sign, turn left. Drive past a horse paddock
and pole barn to the metal CSO building. From Alachua: Go south on CR 241 until
just before the I-75 overpass. Turn left on NW 109th Lane and continue as above.
