GCC Friends,

Please see attached.   Volunteers are needed for a community bike safety event in East Gainesville. I will be volunteering, and I hope other GCC members will consider helping out, too.  If you are a certified bike helmet fitter, please consider coming out to help staff the helmet giveaway.
Not a certified helmet fitter?  No problem.  You can help with registration, crowd management, bike rodeo, food service, set-up/tear-down, or other tasks, as needed.  All GCC members, new and old, experienced at volunteering or not, are welcome.  Come out and help our Eastside neighbors cycle more safely for fun, exercise, and transportation, while helping to promote our Club..

Let me know if you can help, and I’ll add you to the list of GCC volunteers who plan to attend.

Thanks, and I hope to see you there!

-Ally

Subject: Assistance needed for S.E. Gainesville bicycle safety event
Date: January 18, 2018 at 9:22:57 PM EST

Greetings to Gainesville area parents/guardians/families, churches, community groups/neighborhoods, schools, agencies/businesses, athletic teams and others:

My name is Dekova Batey, I am the Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator for the Gainesville area since 2001 and would like to share information on an upcoming community event regarding important bicycle safety while having fun fellowship with our community. We invite your group to join in on making this event a great success by RSVP volunteer names to assist on event day, donating resources for food, drinks and paper goods, bicycles for raffle and/or bicycle/pedestrian related information/resource booth or table. Please see below for more specifics on how you can volunteer.

Bicycling is not just a children’s activity, it is a legitimate form of transportation for many or our neighbors…whether due to disability, loss of driving privileges, accessing shopping, school or work, healthy option for getting around or just a manner to better enjoy the community, bicycling is an option for many in our community and by law considered a vehicle with all the rights and responsibility as other vehicles when operated on the roadway.

Aside from other factors like aggressive, distracted and impaired driving, it can be very dangerous to not consider a bicycle on the roadway as a vehicle and could easily result in the injuries and deaths we see in crash statistics. We want to educate everyone on many facets of bicycle safety, including cyclists themselves since they are more at risk.

The Gainesville Police Department is planning a bicycle safety training course “Bike Rodeo” event for a tentative date of Saturday, February 10, 2018, from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. Looking into the event being held at T.B. McPherson Recreation Center at 1717 SE 15th Street, Gainesville, FL. 32641 (not yet confirmed).
