Having just perused bicycle fatality statistics*, (one third happen at intersections) I was thinking of them as I crossed to the north of a busy intersection. Once across, I waited at the curb to go west. As I was waiting a man in a pick up started swearing at me. I couldn't quite figure out what he was saying, but I sure got the idea he didn't like something I had done. .I did hear, "It's people like you that raise our taxes!" Looking at him bewildered I pondered: did I cross wrong, not wear a helmet or bright clothing, get in someone's way? Did he know I advocated for the Braid trail? Then as he started off down Millhopper road he shouted, "You crazy people vote for niggers!"  Oh, yes I hadn't removed the campaign sticker on the back of my jacket!

* 70 percent die from head injuries in ninety percent of all accidents the person is not wearing a helmet (I thought this was because of crazy college kids who ride a lot in a crazy manner and don't wear helmets- but to my surprise in that year- the lowest death rate in cycle accidents (other than the very old or very young) was in college age folks. The peak years for deaths is age 13 and 45- mostly male and most often between 6 and 9pm.
